Declutter: Day 38

Smart Girls Have More Fun
Declutter

These Chucks were gifted to me about 5 years ago. They didn't fit the person that bought them - he or she (I seem to remember it was a he, but dang if I remember who) was kind enough to send them to me instead of return them. I've worn them to death since, including at Burning Man. It's tempting to keep them for Burning Man next year. However, at this point I've blown out the heel and there's a hole starting, so it's time for them to go to the great shoe store in the sky.

Bye, Chucks! I sure enjoyed you.

Did they already go? If not, consider stuffing them in your quake kit. Chucks go fairly flat despite being relatively decent foot coverage. The smart folks suggest taking a pair of shoes and putting them in a plastic bag, then tying it to one of the bed's feet. You're in bed a lot, and we don't wear shoes to bed - having to get up and find shoes when there's rubble and glass around could suck. And tying them to the bed ensures they'll stay nearby even if stuff moves around. (My bed is so close to my shoe closet that I have not bothered, I admit, but there is a pair of elderly Chucks in my quake supplies.)

If you sent these on already, keep it in mind for the next sturdy shoes that are starting to wear out. (Obviously heels and sandals are not so useful in emergencies, other than fashion emergencies.)

I already sent them on, and I don't think they'd make good quake shoes in any case - I threw them out because the blowout in the heel meant they were actually injuring my feet. Thanks for pointing this out - now I know I need to have some sort of pair of quake shoes.

It's one of the most common things to not have available in an emergency when you need them, owing to that "plaster and glass on the floor between me and the shoes" issue. But most of us can age out a pair of sneakery things and tie them to the bed.

For emergency kits in non-quake country, waterproof boots are often a better bet, but they take up a lot more space than a pair of canvas sneakers. (Any sneaker will do, and others may be more protective of the feet, but canvas ones fold up into a very small space for shoes. If you're tight on space for your kit like a lot of us apartment dwellers, that may be the way to go.)

Another clever idea is to assume your gym bag (if you have one) is part of your emergency kit - guarantees you a towel and shoes and change of clothes, albeit sweaty ones. Since they're all in a bag, they're easy to grab and go in emergencies. (Or they may live in your car.)
