piss off
Thanks to [info]angelcityblues for bringing this to my attention.

Two very skilled cyclists were attacked by a doctor in a vehicle on Mandeville Canyon Road in Brentwood.

How badly? Well, he stopped short directly in front of them. This is the photo of the rear windshield with the hole in it where one cyclist went through.

Might I repeat, the guy who did this is a doctor. He stood over the two injured parties screaming at them after he did this. And, apparently, it wasn't the first time he has used his car as a weapon against cyclists.

Be careful, all you folks out there.

Yeah, I'm still recovering and they didn't even stop when they hit me. Let alone stand over me and yell at me for getting hit by them.

Hey, I missed the post in which you announced you'd been hit. FWIW, I'm really sorry. Hope you're healing quickly.

Yeah, I'm coming along pretty well in fact. Still cannot feel my right cheek, upper lip, upper teeth, upper gums, and nose, but it seems to be coming back slowly.

No, that's Christopher R Thompson, not Christopher T Thompson, the suspect in this case.

Yikes, that kind of mistaken identity can really mess with a person's life.

Yeah, several people have made that mistake, and the child psychologist is apparently getting harassed.

ok, let me go ahead and state that yea, this is fucked up and should have never happened at all. its really shitty people cant treat each other better.

but as cycling has gotten more popular, at least in atlanta, i can see how this all started...

alot of the cyclers here don't seem to know the laws at all and if they do, ignore them anyway. almost to say, im a biker and im better than you people with cars.

i actually hit a guy on a bike in inman park about 4 months ago.

and it was his own damn fault.

i was at a light, and there were 3 cars behind me. up comes this biker and he didn't want to wait for the light to turn green, so he went on our left side, passing all 4 of us.

however the light did turn green just as he was coming up on my car. i pressed my pedal and he just happened to cross in front of my car, from left to right, as i hit the gas. he got knocked off his ass and thrown about 10 feet.
oh, and he made this face as he was passing me by, as to say, fuck you you non-biker! i am fucking all the rules. right before the BAM!

i got out and was concerned about him. asked if he was ok, called 911, was worried.

he gets up and starts ripping me a new asshole, singing bout how he is gonna sue the shit out of me, and how this is all my fault. one of the cars behind me saw the whole thing and said, no, its your fault because you didnt want to wait for the light to turn green.

cops were called, he was ticketed, and had to pay to fix the dent in my car.

and i was livid. i really didnt give a shit bout bikers until they became so popular and i started noticing none of them give a damn about the rules they are suppose to follow, almost causing accidents, and in my case, actually causing one.

Yeah, a lot of them are like that here, too. They seem to forget that they are actually a type of vehicle and have to pay attention to the signals. Boy once rode bikes quite a bit and it makes him livid. Never mind the ones who ride on the sidewalks and yell at the pedestrians to get out of their way. One of these days I'm going to forget I'm a nice person, lose it, and tell 'em to piss off because it's a damn sidewalk and people who are actually *walking* get the right away.

You really lucked out that there was a witness and the cops actually charged the right person. What a creep.

what started my "hate" of bikers was i purchased an expensive bowl as a wedding gift for someone and a biker on the sidewalk came blazing by, causing me to drop it and break it.

since then i dont really care for bikers at all. but i stand by my hitting as a total accident. i just might have secretly enjoyed it

Oh believe me, I get that feeling, esp when I've almost been mowed down by bicycle messengers in Boston. But when someone goes beyond feelings and intentionally causes a person physical harm...*shivers* Just thinking someone with that warped sense of revenge/privilege is walking around makes me almost afraid to leave the house.

wow. thats mature.

yes, im fat. but that has nothing to do with disliking people who blow thru traffic lights and cause wrecks or feel like the laws don't apply to them.

even more mature - you hide behind an anonymous comment. chickenshit.

Yeah, my general attitude towards bikers is,
you get in my way when I'm walking.
you get in my way when I'm in a car.
you get in my way when I'm biking myself.

*pick a damned rule set, already!*

Right, but these are cyclists who scrupulously follow the rules of the road. It's the most well-reputed cycling group in LA.

I am sorry for your pain - but when you hit me with your car and I'm on my bike, I wind up in the hospital, or worse.

i agree - what happened is wrong, very wrong. and this doctor probably has some major issues.

however, there are a lot of non-rule following bikers out there (and good its not these guys) and it is very fuckin frustrating. its b/c one of them didnt wanna follow the rules that i hit him.

Therefore you 'hate' us1 all? That's a little harsh, don't you think? You probably do not notice the bikers who do follow all the rules of the road because they do not bring adverse attention to themselves. Chances are you notice only the ones who violate the rules and more often those who violate the rules and "get in your way" as someone else put it.

There are a number of local organizations across the nation which promote 'vehicular cycling'. Here, the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign holds classes explaining what is expected of cyclists because many simply are not aware their bicycle is a 'vehicle' (but not specifically motor vehicle) and must obey traffic laws. Others absolutely ignore this. All cyclists' ignorance/disobedience should be corrected. I cannot and will not condone those actions which break traffic laws, especially by a cyclist. One of the next events by ABC is "Courteous Mass", which is designed to promote proper cycling.

I have a lot of contempt for the "share the road" bumper stickers because of those who do not follow the rules. However, I (when I'm not on my bike) and every other driver out there need to remember there are those who absolutely do follow the rules and appreciate it when drivers do the same and share the road.

That sucks that a cyclist caused you to drop your gift. That sucks that another cyclist did something stupid (blaming you) that caused you to hit them. I can only hope as more cyclists hit the roads, they take the time to remember they're a vehicle, too. There will always be a contingency of those who refuse to do so. Unfortunately, I think their own actions will bring them and others harm.

I have been hit by a car while I was on a bicycle. Thankfully, she ran over the front wheel of my bike and not me. I walked away with minor scrapes and bruises because this was well before the days of widely accepted helmets.

1 I include me in that sentence even though I am a new cyclist in the city, I have been on my bicycle almost every day since I purchased it. I obey traffic laws; I act as though I am a 'regular' vehicle on the street. I've seen some drivers get annoyed with that, too.

The driver was released on $30,000 bond after his arrest, says KFI:

An emergency room physician faces felony assault with a deadly weapon charges after he allegedly – intentionally – caused a collision with two bicyclists in Mandeville Canyon in Pacific Palisades July 4.

Dr. Christopher T. Thompson, 58, posted $30,000 bail shortly after his arrest at the scene of the crash and is due in court next month, according to booking records.

This is a prime example of why I don't have a truck with a plow on the front.

I'd be waaaaaayyyyy to tempted to do something stupid like that to other motorists...

Not bicyclists - they are too soft, you can't hear the satisfying crunch/grind as you hit a nice solid vehicle with a plow. Sounds like changing lanes with a twist...or maybe a bad COPS show with someone carjacking a snowplow just to hit the *other* idiots on the road.

I think I have to take my medication now... :)

Ugh. See... I just bought a bike a week ago. I've happily been riding it and trying my damnedest to practice vehicular cycling -- riding my bicycle following the same rules as though I am driving a car.

I know there are cyclists out there who don't even come close and I know they aggravate the crap out of me when I am actually in the car in the driver seat, but the actions of this "doctor" are uncalled for, and it scares me. Is this what I am in for as a new cyclist? Is this aggressiveness towards cyclists a growing trend? Paranoia ensues. ;-)

It scares me, too. I cycle, as well, and am planning to do a lot more of it in Monterey. I'm nervous that we're turning into a cars vs. bikes society.

But, heck, I've been hit by a car in LA while on foot, so...

I haven't cycled at all since college and I got hit by a car within two weeks of starting there. I was in the bike lane, girl came along side me and turned right (no signal!)... right into me. There was a cop behind the two of us. He stopped and asked ME if I had been drinking. Both the girl who had hit me and I had just gotten out of marching band rehearsal which ran late into the evenings right before school started. She received no ticket, nothing. Didn't even offer to pay for the wheel she completely ruined.

Hopefully, that'll be my only car/bicycle incident. I have been riding almost every day since I bought it. I'm loving every single second I'm on it.

If this guy does this to cyclists on the road, what's he do to them when he gets them in his emergency room?

He's a very frightening individual.
